Pre-campaign activities: Staff initiated their campaign in April with a study day designed for ward and clinic ‘link nurses and champions.’ This event equipped them with the knowledge and resources needed to champion insulin safety within their respective areas. They were then tasked with disseminating this crucial information through a dedicated Microsoft Teams channel in the lead-up to Insulin Safety Week in July.

Campaign execution: During Insulin Safety Week, the team strategically placed informational stands in central hospital locations and conducted ward visits to maximise staff engagement. These efforts aimed to educate as many staff members as possible about insulin safety and diabetes technology. They provided comprehensive resource packs for each work area, including posters and tip sheets, to reinforce the campaign’s messages.

Communication strategy: To reach colleagues who could not engage in person, staff  leveraged multiple communication channels. This included the Chief Nurse’s weekly email, daily bulletins, and social media platforms, ensuring their message reached the entire trust.

Engagement and creativity: To further involve staff, they launched a competition inviting them to create works that highlighted insulin safety. Submissions could be in various forms, such as poems, posters, artwork, or videos, encouraging creativity. To kickstart the competition, one of their Diabetes Specialist Nurses shared an inspiring poem on local social media channels. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with entries ranging from videos to posters and poems.

Insulin Safety Week 2024 has been funded by Dexcom, Embecta, GlucoRx, Medtronic, Sanofi and Ypsomed which have had no input into any arrangements or content.
