County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust

During Insulin Safety Week, staff demonstrated creativity through the establishment of an educational stand and the production of instructional videos on the use of Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs).

Educational stand

An engaging and informative stand was set up in the hospital’s main lobby, featuring:

  • Interactive displays: Hands-on demonstrations of CGMs allowed patients and staff to practice using the devices under expert guidance.
  • Informational brochures: Comprehensive brochures detailing the benefits, setup, and maintenance of CGMs were distributed to visitors.
  • Q&A sessions: Regularly scheduled Q&A sessions provided a platform to address questions and offer personalised advice on CGM use and insulin safety.

Instructional videos

Recognising the need for accessible, on-demand education, a series of high-quality instructional videos were created, covering:

  • CGM setup: Step-by-step guides on setting up various CGM models, ensuring users can start using their devices confidently.
  • Usage tips: Practical tips for everyday use, including how to interpret CGM data, manage alerts, and troubleshoot common issues.
  • Safety practices: Emphasis on safe insulin administration practices, integrating CGM data for optimal glucose management.

Impact

The contributions during Insulin Safety Week led to improved understanding of insulin safety and CGM usage among both patients and healthcare providers and overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients.
