Cromwell Hospital

Daily focused events:

  • Monday: The week began with a bite-sized insulin safety session, focusing on the medical use of Variable Rate Intravenous Insulin Infusions (VRIII).
  • Tuesday: Two interactive sessions were held, concentrating on the surgical use of VRIII and the management and prevention of hypoglycaemia.
  • Wednesday: An in-depth session on the appropriate use and management of VRIII supported the launch of revised policies, and the commencement of a new bespoke insulin safety reference library.
  • Thursday: Dedicated to creating broader awareness of the safe use of diabetes technology in the hospital, an informative stand in the canteen showcased cutting-edge diabetes technology. This gave staff the opportunity to interact with these devices, enhancing their understanding through hands-on experience. An interactive quiz engaged participants, with prizes for both participation and winners. This event was widely publicised via the hospital’s internal communications and education platform.

Humanitarian highlight

The week also highlighted a humanitarian cause led by one of the hospital’s dietitians, who has Type 1 diabetes herself. She raised funds by climbing Ben Nevis to support “Breaking Through T1Diabetes,” adding a meaningful dimension to the campaign.

Practical sessions

To conclude the week, practical sessions were conducted on spotting and preventing Lipohypertrophy and the importance of correct injection techniques.

Insulin Safety Week 2024 has been funded by Dexcom, Embecta, GlucoRx, Medtronic, Sanofi and Ypsomed which have had no input into any arrangements or content.
