United Lincolnshire Hospitals

Lincoln County Hospital’s Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN) team had a fantastic week raising awareness about insulin safety and the effective use of diabetes technology during Insulin Safety Week 2024.

Campaign activities: Throughout the week, the DSN team actively engaged with ward staff using an education trolley, providing valuable information and resources. They set up an educational stand that showcased both old and new diabetes technology, attracting the interest of staff and visitors eager to learn more about Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) systems.

To illustrate the real-world application and benefits of HCL, a ‘dummy’ with diabetes technology was used, and their Tech Support staff member shared personal experiences with HCL, highlighting its life-changing impact on patients.

Digital and social media outreach: In addition to in-person activities, the DSN team promoted Insulin Safety Week through the hospital’s Facebook page and via internal communication emails. Daily posts provided online education on topics like the six steps to insulin safety and showcased pictures of our information stand. They also shared links to Diabetes Technology Network (DTN), Diabetes UK, and the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Diabetes training.

Interactive component: To further engage staff, they developed a short questionnaire titled “Enter to Win,” distributed both at the educational stand and during ward walks.

Impact:

  • Social media posts reached 7,904
  • Ward rounds reached 250
  • Main entrance stand 150
  • Questionnaire reached 150
  • Selfies taken with prop 150
  • Canteen stand reached 100
